Berwick Academy inspires a love of books
Berwick Academy has a new library, thanks to the hard work and generosity of students, staff, parents and the local community who have supported the school in the Berwick Academy Library Campaign. After the school launched the campaign, donations from the community, local writers, publishers and teachers grew, until there were thousands of books in stock.
A team of dedicated student librarians was pivotal to the success of the project; these brilliant volunteers helped with organising and categorising library stock, spending many enjoyable hours discussing books at lunchtime. The space which houses the library was also renovated, to make it bright and welcoming to students.
Now Berwick Academy is focussing on encouraging all students to use the facilities as part of the Berwick Reads project, which puts reading at the heart of the school. The library is just one aspect of this project, which also includes Reading Registrations, reading competitions and virtual readathons by teachers. Teacher audiobooks have been so popular that they are now a feature of form time once a week - one of two Reading Registrations each week when students engage with reading.
The Berwick Reads project continues to be developed to encourage every student to engage in reading for pleasure, and more information can be found on the school website. If you would like to help Berwick Academy to build its library further by donating a book, the school would be delighted to hear from you.
