Northumberland farmers urged to help showcase the best of British agriculture
Farmers from across Northumberland will soon open their farm gates once again to welcome visitors.
The 15th annual LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) Open Farm Sunday takes place on Sunday, June 27.
The UK wide initiative designed to engage and encourage the public to take more of an interest and gain a better understanding of all that is great within British agriculture.
With farms offering walks, displays, talks or just the opportunity to find out a little bit more about where your food comes from and how farmers shape the very landscape around you - there is sure to be something for everyone, young and old. Discover first-hand what is means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do.
As the country emerges from lockdown and restrictions are lifted, they are encouraging more farmers to take part and host a simple event.
Its free online ticketing service will allow for greater control of visitor numbers and timeslots can help manage the flow of visitors which will go some way towards easing any concerns over social distancing.
Anne Mair-Chapman, from Milfield, has taken on the role of promoting the event and is encouraging farmers – and the general public – to get involved.
She said: “I am delighted to take up the role of LEAF Open Farm Sunday Ambassador covering North East England and I look forward to supporting our host farmers in the run up to this year’s event.
“As a farmer’s daughter and working on our tenanted family farm in north Northumberland I have a vested interest in the public’s engagement with the agricultural industry.
"Farming in general has taken a well-documented beating in the press of late and with the help of organisations such as LEAF, there is a real chance to shift this perception.”
New host farmers would be fully supported with access to online resources, training videos, webinars and of course at the end of the phone. From small private, invite only events to self-guided farm walks or organised talks and displays, LEAF Open Farm Sunday can be as small or as large as you like, you decide.
