The CD, ‘Live & Approved’ will be officially launched at a gig at West Barns Inn, Dunbar, this Sunday, July 13, but Ewan went even closer to home to record it.

Coldingham Hall became a second home to Ewan when he still lived at home, often playing gigs with his band and regular filling guest artist spots at the accordion and fiddle club so it was with little hesitation that he decided it would be the venue to record his live CD.

After having a hankering to do one for a while, Ewan got the ball rolling and the album was recorded in front of a large crowd at the hall in December.

“Doing a live album is a challenge and I wanted a challenge,” he explained.

“I spoke to the guys in my band and they were all up for it. I got a guy I know from Dumfries to be compere and thankfully it all went to plan.

“There was a crowd of 70 people and I just told them to gee it yaldie so there was a really good atmosphere with loads of cheering and clapping.”

Although Ewan has spent a lot of time in studios recording his first three albums and hosting a show on TD1 Radio, he said doing it live felt a lot better.

“It’s much more natural as playing live it’s what we’re used to as musicians,” he continued.

“I definitely want to do another one but not for a wee while yet; it took a lot of work.

“Someone else produced my first three albums for me but I decided to do this one myself.

“I kind of learnt as I went but it’s made me want to do more; I’d love to produce albums for other acts.”

Although they were very content with his crowd of 70 in Coldingham, Ewan and his band recently played to a much larger crowd after being invited to perform at the Royal Highland Show.

“There was 178,000 there but I’m not sure we played to quite that many,” he joked.

“We played two different stages and then the members’ area in the evening. It was a great experience.”
