Bygone Borderlands exhibition back in Berwick

The popular Bygone Borderlands Exhibition makes a return to Berwick Town Hall this weekend as part of the Berwick 900 Festival.

Monday, 27th April 2015, 9:41 pm

Open from 11am – 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a wide range of displays and events celebrating the heritage of Berwick and surrounding communities on both sides of the borders.

The displays provided by local history and heritage groups in the area will cover Lowick; Wooler; Seahouses; Belford; Crookham; Ayton; Chirnside; Coldstream; Eyemouth and other places.

The North Northumberland and Scottish Borders Family History Societies will also be present to assist anyone with genealogical queries and the “Our Families” project want to collect your stories of Berwick families.

If, for you, ‘Who do you think you are?’ is still an unresolved question, here is an opportunity to get started.

In the council chamber, an hourly programme of talks each day has amongst its themes: snapshots of eighteenth century Bamburgh; the lost houses of North Northumberland; recently discovered information about Flodden and the history of Berwick Town Hall.

The exhibition is particularly fortunate to have secured Piers Dixon of the Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments in Scotland as a speaker.

At midday on Saturday, he will talk about “Revisiting Roxburgh”, sharing findings on resurveying Roxburgh Castle and burgh. Historic Films of Berwick will also be shown at 1pm each day.

Upstairs in the Old Goal, visitors can find out more about the Flodden Project. There will be a display and Jane Miller, the Project’s Education Officer, will offer a range of activities about Tudor Berwick for children old and young, under the overall title ‘Berwick’s Horrible History’!

This event, run by the Berwick Record Office and the Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archives has kindly been supported by the Flodden Project, Joicey Trust and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

With free entry and excellent refreshments Bygone Borderlands has something for everyone and is definitely an event not to be missed!
