The Acklington scheme, named Southfields, is being developed on the former Pearson’s Garage site by Surgo Construction for Buchanan Estates.
The land was once occupied by RAF Acklington, home to Southfields aerodrome, which closed in 1975.

Surgo director Dave Blyth said: “It was necessary to undertake some essential site preparation work which has been carried out fully in accordance with the strict Government guidelines that we now adhere to and I am pleased to say that construction has now started in earnest.
“We have a growing reputation for collaborating closely with developers who want to create high quality homes. Southfields is our first development in partnership with Buchanan Estates and we are looking forward to watching the scheme progress.”
The scheme, created by architects Blake Hopkinson, comprises two-bedroom bungalows, three-bedroom terraced houses, four-bedroom semis and four and five-bedroom detached homes, all arranged within a courtyard setting.

William Davies of Buchanan Estates added: “I am delighted to see work underway on this niche site and have every confidence in the choice of our highly experienced development partner, Surgo Construction and appointed selling agent, WalkersXchange.
“The site’s historic links to World War II when RAF Acklington was a base for Spitfires and Hurricanes, have been the inspiration behind the branding for the development.
“I like to think we are giving the site a new lease of life with this wonderful, carefully designed residential development and look forward to being able to release the first units to sell off plan in the near future.”

There are some wonderful vernacular buildings in the village, and we wanted to complement the setting with a scheme which has echoes of a traditional rural courtyard yet provides a range of properties that meet contemporary lifestyle demand.”
Surgo’s other developments include Nursery Gardens, a 34-unit scheme currently on site in Stannington.
