High Howden SC 2, Wooler 3

WOOLER consolidated their position in third place in the Northern Alliance second division with this victory which proved to be more difficult than it should have been.

For most of the game Wooler were firmly in control and with goals from Tom Martin, Mark Forrest and James Scott they took a commanding lead.

Tom Martin in particular had a good game both in attack and defence.

High Howden got a goal back through Graham Dodds but Wooler were still in a strong position, but a succession of injuries to Tait, Forrest and Saunders meant a reshuffle and substitutes playing out of position.

High Howden pulled another goal back through Graeme Findlay and Wooler manager and emergency cente half Barry Guthrie described the last 20 minutes of the game as a mixture of “Custers last stand and the Battle of Rorkes Drift.”

To great relief Wooler held on and secured the three points.
