Learmonth in grand form at Birmingham

editorial image

GUY Learmonth was in superb form at the weekend in the Birmingham Grand Prix, one of the world’s premier indoor meetings.

Learmonth did not disappoint and finished in a fine fifth place in a new PB of 1min 47.41 sec, just behind winner Mike Rimmer GB, Kaki of Sudan, one of the world’s greatest runners in history, Mutar Mohammed GB and Andrew Osagie GB.

Learmonth took some notable scalps, including UK champion Joe Thomas, Andreas Bube of Denmark, who is a 1min 44 sec runner and Josef Repcik of Slovakia.

Learmonth also recorded a new Scottish under 23 indoor 800m record and went to third on the all-time senior list just behind Tom McKean and Brian Whittle.

He also went to sixth in the all time under 23 GB indoor list and is honing in fast on Sebastian Coe’s record of 1min 46.65 and still has another two years in that age group.

Learmonth is also in the European top ten and will be anxiously waiting to see of he has been included in the great Britain team for the European indoor championships in Gothenburg.

In Saturday’s race Learmonth was almost last at the bell but produced a fast final lap, including a tremendous fourth bend, to close in on the leaders as they approached the finish line.
