Hockey - Berwick remain top of the table

Berwick v Newcastle Medics hockey match at Berwick Acadamy

Berwick v Newcastle Medics hockey match at Berwick Acadamy

Whitley Bay 3s 1, Berwick Ladies 2: BERWICK, with their midfield controlling play, made a bright start to this match and after several near misses from Hayley Garland, India Guthrie, Linzi Hogg and Carly Robertson, they finally opened the scoring after 20 minutes through Garland following a run into the circle.

The goal kicked Whitley Bay into life and they applied some pressure, but the Berwick defence of Corrine and Jodie Williamson stopped them getting through, giving them only one shot on goal. However, Emily Jefferies hassled the player making a great save! With only two minutes left of the first half Nicole Wilson made a run from defence right up into the oppositions’ circle and was awarded a penalty corner.

This was pushed out by Hogg to Wilson who struck a cracking shot that rattled off the back boards taking Berwick 2-0 into the lead just before the break.

Berwick emerged for the second half in a more determined mood and for the first ten minutes they dominated play.

Whitley refused to give up though, and they put the brakes on Berwick, applying some pressure of their own.

The game slowed and lost its flow, resulting in a few dodgy tackles, one of which resulted in Wilson being carded.

Close to the end of Whitley won a penalty corner and pulled a goal back, making the final score 2-1.

The win keeps Berwick top of the table.
