Golfing siblings keep titles in the family with double triumph

Kurt and Kara Yule have won both mans and womens championships at Goswick Golf Club

Kurt and Kara Yule have won both mans and womens championships at Goswick Golf Club

Golfing siblings Kurt and Kara Yule are celebrating a unique achievement with a double championship success at Goswick.

Kurt, who is 19, won the men’s championship last month, and sister Kara followed it up with victory in the ladies event last weekend.

Kurt has only been playing golf for six years - before that he was a keen footballer.

But he showed his potential on the fairways and around the greens last year when he won the club championship at The Hirsel in Coldstream.

This year he has also helped Goswick win the North Northumberland League, beating off the challenge of the likes of Alnwick, Alnmouth and Bamburgh in the process.

And as he continues to make progress he is closing in on his target of finishing the season as a scratch player.

“I have been playing quite well,” he said, “and my goal has been to get to scratch before the end of the year.

“I’m off a handicap of one at the moment, so I’m getting there.”

Following on from his title success Kurt played in the Northern Champion of Champions event at Close House on Sunday.

And next month he will be representing the club again in the inter-league play-offs.

“It’s been quite a year so far,” he said. “It’s one I never expected, and whilst I didn’t think too much about it when Kara won the ladies championship as well, I suppose it is quite an achievement.”

Kara, who is 17, has only been playing golf since the age of 13, after being introduced to the game by her late grandfather.

She even took two years out to concentrate on hockey, but says her sporting ture lies in golf.

In 2011 she won the St Andrew’s Junior Ladies Open, but this was her first competing with the senior ladies at Goswick and winning the championship came as a major surprise to her.

“I didn’t expect to win,” she said, “but thinking about it afterwards it was a little bit special after Kurt had won the mens’ as well.

“Unfortunately, there are not a lot of young girl golfers my age at Goswick at the moment, which means I have to play with the boys, but I don’t want that to hamper my progress in the game.”
