McLaren may return, but it's no go Gribben

BERWICK boss Jimmy Crease is hopeful that he might be able to add to his squad with the possible inclusion of former Ranger Fraser McLaren.

The midfielder-cum-striker, who was a regular member of the team last season, has recently been on trial with both Derby County and Carlisle United.

The ex-Gretna man failed to win a contract with either side and he wants full-time football, but Crease said he is currently still looking for an opening.

"I have been speaking with Fraser," said Crease, "and we have told him that if things don't work out for him and he wishes to return to Shielfield we would be more than happy to have him back."

However, there will be no return for last year's leading striker Darren Gribben, who has already made inquiries with the club about a possible comeback after failing to settle at Dumbarton.

"Darren scored 14 goals for us last season," said Crease, "and when a player like that becomes available you have to be interested.

"But we already have three strikers on our books, so unless the chairman wins the lottery there isn't really any chance of it happening."

This Saturday Berwick travel to Coatbridge for their first away league fixture of the season against Albion Rovers.

Jamie Ewart is still suspended, and both Robbie Horn and Paul McMullan are sidelined through injury.

"Paul might be back in training next week," said Crease, "which is a lot quicker than we initially thought, but he is still a long way off being match fit."
