Eight medals for Berwick oars at Scottish Indoors

Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh was the venue for the 2012 Scottish Indoor rowing championships. Berwick ARC was pleased to be sending 11 competitors - and they returned with a fantastic eight medals, collecting three gold, four silver and a bronze!

First race of the day was Andrew Cairns in U13. Andrew put in a fantastic performance recording a new personal best of 499m in two minutes to give him gold medal equal as Andrew and Fergus from George Watson’s could not be split.

Charlotte Seaton in under 12 raced in an unusually large field and only just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth with a new personal best distance. Alex Hutton and Rory Hindhaugh were next onto the concept two rowing machines in U14.

These boys had to row for three minutes, and in a very hotly contested event both boys did extremely well, finishing in 6th and 8th respectively - a good result in their first experience of the competition. Also competing for the first time was Jack Davidson in U15.

As ages rise the times and distances go up, with Jack rowing for four minutes and covering 990m - again a creditable performance in a strong field.

After the boys individual races Andrew, Alex, Rory and Jack formed a team for the U15 1,000m relay. This is a fast and furious race, and with four rowers and just one rowing machine the race can be won or lost in the speed of the changeover. A very polished team from George Watson’s took the honours this time but the Berwick lads appeared to have enjoyed the challenge.

Tom Hinsby proved that age is no barrier, competing in the 60+ event to record an impressive fourth place.

Elvira Drummond had the biggest task of the day having to cover 2,000m in the U19 race. She stuck to her race plan and covered the distance in a new personal best.

Sam Seaton lifted silver in ladies 30+ lightweight, covering the 1,000m in another personal best time. Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns stepped up for the 40+ race with an unusually large field of entrants.

Alison pushed hard from the start and was over the 1,000m in 3.38. Despite making a push at half way Hilary was unable to catch Alison but was pleased to pick up silver.

Alison, Sam, Hilary and Elvira formed a team for the 2,000m relay. This saw an epic race between Talkin Tarn and Berwick. Both teams pushed hard and changed at the same interval with the lead changing hands several times. Talkin Tarn ran out the eventual winners with Berwick a close second in a new team time of 6.58.

The final races of the day were the open sprints - a flat out maximum effort for 500m. Elvira Drummond and Sam Seaton competed in the ladies lightweight and Alison Inglis and Rowena Park in the open.

Elvira put in everything she had left after a day’s racing and was justly rewarded with the gold medal. Alison and Rowena put in maximum effort and were rewarded with silver and bronze medals respectively.
