Last gasp loss for Eyemouth

Eyemouth United 2, Hawick Royal Albert 3

Eyemouth suffered only their second league defeat of the season when they were beaten 3-2 at home.

The Fishermen went down with virtually the last kick of the game, but what disappointed the players most was the fact that they led twice at 1-0 and 2-1, and also missed a first half penalty.

With one player calling off sick, a late team change was needed with Phillips reverting to a centre back position.

They opened brightly and after missing the penalty eventually took the lead through Conor Lough, who gave them a 1-0 half-time advantage.

After the break Eyemouth continued to boss the play, but they were pegged back by a breakaway Hawick equaliser.

James Wilson then restored the home side’s advantage and as they were enjoying most of the possession another victory looked to be on the cards.

But manager Carl Hudson had warned his players about a lack of concentration amd when goalkeeper Mutch misjudged a ball into the box it ended up in the back of the net and the teams were level again.

With the final whistle approaching a draw looked likely, but in their last attack the Eyemouth defence allowed themselves to be out-muscled and a Hawick player managed to get the decisive touch on the ball and force it over the line.

Manager Hudson said all his players were bitterly disappointed at the defeat, which meant they lost ground on leaders Coldstream at the top of the table.

The teams are due to meet this week in what is bound to be a keenly contested match between the sides, and Hudson says it would be the ideal game for his players to bounce back to form.

Team: Mutch, Jess, Spiers, Phillips, Walker, Wilson, Clark, Adamson, James, Lough, Shennan.
