BERWICK longest serving player, and their record goal scorer to boot, Eric Tait has been honoured by the club by having the new hospitality suite at Shielfield Park named after him.

The Eric Tait Lounge, situated in what used to be part of the board room, will be used to serve pre-match meals to fans, sponsors and their guests.

Tait first joined the club in the 1969-70 season and went on to play a record 526 games for Rangers (439 in the league), scoring a record 114 goals (104 in the league).

He also had a spell as player manager between 1983-87 and still attends games at Shielfield today, working for the Press Association as their match statistician.

Tait, who also previously ran a sports shop in Berwick, now lives in Ryton, Newcastle with his family – wife Gillian and children Cameron, Emma and Ben.

Speaking at the official naming ceremony on Saturday, prior to the home game against Annan, he said: “I had many happy years here as a player and player-manager.

“As a Coldstream lad it was always my ambition to play for Berwick and I am very proud of the fact that I went on to become the longest serving player and the highest goal scorer.

“It is a great honour for me that the new lounge should be named after me. It was a great surprise when I first learned about it from the chairman Brian Porteous, but of course it was an honour I had to accept.”
