Worrall has special reason to ride in BEN meeting
BERWICK have added a second name to their roster for the BEN Fund Bonanza, which wiill launch the 2013 speedway season at Berwick.
Newcastle’s Richie Worrall is the latest name to be released, following that of last year’s event winner, England international Ben Barker.
And the youngster admits that he has a very special reason for wanting to ride in the meeting.
“I broke my leg last season and the BEN Fund helped me out a lot,” he said.
“This will let me give something back to them and also get a lot of Newcastle fans to the meeting.”
Worrall was arguably the fastest-rising UK star last season until he sustained the injury at the end of June which kept him out of action for the rest of the campaign.
But he is now on the comeback trail and is looking forward to the meeting which will be held at Shielfield on Saturday, March 9.
Berwick spokesman Dennis McCleary said: “Richie, whose twin brother Steve also rides for the Diamonds, is a very talented young rider and his inclusion in the field is bound to attract a lot of attention.
“His injury was a big blow last season but he is hoping to be back to his best by the time the new season starts as he plans to race in New Zealand over the next few weeks.”
Worrall added “I can’t wait for it to be honest. I’m off out to New Zealand in a couple of weeks to ride out there for a month. I have ridden once since the injury, a couple of weeks ago, and I was a bit rusty and not confident, but hopefully it will come back.
“I’m training hard now and putting a lot of money into getting my gear right. I hope the trip to New Zealand will mean that I can come back as good as before.
“Berwick’s a good venue for me because it’s close enough to Newcastle to bring a good number of fans.”
Meanwhile, Berwick have confirmed that following the BEN meeting a grand auction will be held in the Black and Gold social club to raise more money for the good cause.
The Bandits are not due to take to the track officially until Easter weekend (Saturday, March 30) against as yet unnamed opposition.
Club director George Hepburn commented: “Ideally, if everything goes to plan, we would have liked to have kept things rolling by racing on the 16th and 23rd of March, but most teams do not want to open until Easter weekend and we look as if we will follow suit,”
Berwick will stage their annual press and practice at Shielfield on Saturday, March 23, followed with an informal get-together with the riders in the Black and Gold.
* Last week it was confirmed Berwick’s match programme had finished third in the annual ‘Speedway Star’ Premier League awards, and sixth overall.
Editor McCleary said: “My thanks to the wonderful team who work so hard on the programme. We felt it was a big improvement on 2011.”
