BERWICK’S Nicki Barrett has become the Bandits’ first injury victim of the year, suffering a compression of vertebrae on a skiing accident in Austria.o
But Border fans don’t need to panic just yet, for the Dane, who is hoping to bring home the bacon in his first full season of British racing in 2013, says he fully expects to be fit and well for the start of the new campaign at the end of March.
The 23 year-old has been ordered to rest for eight weeks, but he hopes to be back in the saddle at the club’s press and practice at Shielfield on March 23.
“Ironically, I wasn’t even on the piste,” he said. I’d taken off my skis and was walking through snow, which suddenly gave way under my feet, and I sort of avalanched downwards about 30m, ending up slamming backwards into a tree!
“Fortunately, speedway has taught me to protect myself, and I was wearing a back protector, like I do on my bike – and that saved me from something a lot worse, I think”
