Dane hopes to bring home the bacon with Bandits in first full season of British racing
BERWICK’S Nicki Barrett is on the road to recovery and says he fully expects to be fit enough to take his place in the Bandits’ starting line-up in March.
The 23 year-old suffered a compressed vertebrae in a freak skiing accident in Austria recently.
But the Dane says he is confident of bringing home the bacon in his first full season of British racing in 2013.
Barrett believes he can build on the foundations he laid last season when he raced out the last couple of months with the Bandits.
“I am really looking forward to it,” he admitted. “This back injury is a set-back, but a couple of weeks rest and I should be OK.
“Last season I also had a full-time job, but this year it is all about speedway and I am hopeful it will help me develop as a better rider.
“Riding at reserve should be good for me,” he said. “It means I should get extra rides and hopefully it will let me show my worth to the team.
“Last year I did OK, but it was my first real go at speedway in Britain. This year I’m sure I can do better”
Barrett, who will also be riding in the Danish Super League with his new club, Munkebo, wants to upgrade his status in his homeland from a C to a B rider. He would also like to qualify for the DM A final, which is effectively his national championships.
“In the UK my target is simply to develop myself as a better rider,” he said. “I want to be a better starter and be a little bit more technical. I would also like to have a few meetings in the Elite League if that is possible.”
With regards to the Berwick team assembled for 2013 he added: “I think Berwick has got a good team. We had a good team spirit last year, and I’m sure we will feel the same way this year.
“Our chances are as good as everyone else.”
