Bandits named in 2013 Premier League line-up

AS expected, Berwick speedway promoter John Anderson attended the sport’s annual conference at the weekend when he gave the club’s declaration of intent to run in the Premier League in 2013.

As has been well publicised already, Anderson has stressed that the Bandits will only come to the tapes next March providing a major team sponsor is found.

Berwick have been awarded two prestigious events next season - the BEN Fund meeting in March and the British round of the FIM World U21 Final in August, so every effort will be made the ensure the club survives.

In the draw for the KO Cup the Bandits were paired in the first round against Redcar.

Kozza Smith has been crowned Australian Longtrack Champion for the second successive year.

Smith, who rode for Berwick in 2011, signed for the club again in readiness for the start of the 2012 season, but was then ruled out for the year after breaking his thigh last January.

He recently won the New South Wales state longtrack title, but this latest win shows he has now fully recovered from his injury.

Another Berwick loanee hoping to make his racing comeback soon is Ricky Ashworth.

The Manchester based rider, whose season with the Bandits was cut short after he sustained a broken shoulder, has accepted an invitation to ride in the Christmas Cracker meeting which is being held at Somerset on December 28.

Ashworth was recently named the club’s ‘Rider of the Year’ and has said he will be happy to return in 2013 if the Bandits run.
