FOLLOWING disappointment the previous weekend of the Berwick round of the autumn long distance sculling series being cancelled due to a flooded river, the Berwick rowers were keen to get their boats on the River Wansbeck at Cambois and begin their campaign in the third week of the event.
The 4000 meter race attracted over 100 crews from all across the north of England. Berwick was represented by six boats. The first Berwick boat home was the S3 double of Chris Eke and Robin Morrison having found the early wider stretch of the cours
e a challenge the pair pushed on to finish in 14 min 37 sec.
Alison Inglis and Hilary Cairns sculled well into the increasing head-wind and were delighted to finish fastest ladies boat of the day in a time of 15.23. The ladies were using the lottery funded new double scull sponsored by and called Jus Rol.
Rowena Park, Sam Seaton and Estelle Dodd were nearly forced out of the race due to their fourth member being ill. Fortunately they were able to arrange a last minute replacement from Tees rowing club and had an enjoyable row and finished just one place behind the ladies quad scull winners Talkin Tarn.
Rob Harvey and Phil Craze competed in their first long distance race in novice double sculls. Both sculled well over an unknown course.
Berwick's only single scullers of the day were Jamie Martin J18 and Gordon Benton Vet E. Both put in extremely creditable performances into a strong head wind, and competing against a classy field of single scullers.
