Borough SinglesTHE Borough Singles Finals at Berwick Bowling Club last Friday completed the Borough competitions for the 2008 season.
The ladies singles, sponsored by Wait's Coaches of Chirnside, saw Joan Blackett (Spittal BC)
meet the 2007 title holder Margaret Robertson (Berwick BC).
The final was close with the lead changing a number of times over the first 12 ends. Although Blackett had won seven of them, Robertson with an 11-10 lead at that stage went on to win and retain the title for another year.
In the men's singles, Jimmy Barnett met John Lee (both Spittal BC). Barnett, having won the men's Borough Pairs the previous week, was chasing the double. Lee took an early lead and built it to 19-5 by the 12th end. Despite a valiant come back with Barnett taking the next three ends, Lee pushed home his advantage to win 21-10.
The Borough Singles Trophies were presented by Margaret Jackson, president of Berwick Bowling Club.

Ayr Ladies FinalsCHIRNSIDE Ladies Four were unable to make it three-in-a row when they were knocked out of the Scottish Women's National Bowls Championships on Saturday.
The team, made up of Sheila Douglas, Louie Hutchison, Barbara Forsyth and Kay Purves, were knocked out by Blacklands in the second round at Ayr, having won the prestigious tournament for the previous two years.
They are the only club to defend the title successfully, and it looked like they may would take the trophy back to Berwickshire once again when they defeated Duffus Park from Fife 20-9 in round one.
But they were defeated by four shots in the second round by Blacklands of Ayrshire. With the Northfield greens being heavy and Blacklands more accustomed to the playing conditions, Chirnside were defeated in a closely fought match.
Competing in the triples, Berwick were also beaten by a local team, Ardrossan, in the first round.
Meanwhile, it is the turn of the men this week as the Scottish Bowling Association Championships takes place, again at Ayr.
The Ayton Four of Paul Wilson, Ian Patterson, Mark Robertson and Robert Kerr take on Rutherglen in the first round, while Coldstream's Norrie Erskine, Max Lowe, Robert Hamilton and Alan Mitchell will face Annan in round one of the senior fours.
Finally, Stuart Bebbington of Tweedmouth will line up in the junior singles. All first round matches take place on Thursday, with the finals due for Saturday.
Ayr Mens FinalsSTUART Bebbington's Scottish Bowls Championship challenge ended at the semi-final stage after defeat to the eventual winner Iain McMillan.
The Tweedmouth Bowling Club member lost 21-6 to Campbelltown's McMillan in the Junior singles section, who triumphed by the same emphatic scoreline in the final against Alex Higgins of Stranraer.
Bebbington, fresh from his triumph at Aberdeen, had looked in good form leading up to the semi-final. He defeated Guy Malcolmson of Polmaise 21-11 in the first round but had been trailing 9-7 in the early stages.
However, in the space of a few ends Bebbington took the score to 15 shots to 9 in his favour. Bebbington, a previous winner of the Scottish Bowls junior single title, then took a full house of four shots to win the match.
The second round saw Bebbington defeat Alan Davies of Castle Douglas in a closely fought 21-17 win. This turned out to be a very good match and although Bebbington led early on at 6-1, Davies pulled this back to 7 shots each. Davies then went ahead and Bebbington seemed to be in trouble. However, he recovered to go 18-17 ahead and sealed the win with a double.
The 24-year-old then battled to victory against the well fancied Paul O'Donnell of Bainfield 21-15.
O'Donnell started well and was soon 7 shots to nil ahead and although Bebbington gained 2 shots, he was always behind. But Bebbington recovered to lead by 17 shots to 13 and won with a double to make it to the semi's.
But McMillan proved too strong for Bebbington in the last four game. He raced to a 7-0 lead and never looked back. The closest Bebbington got was at 10-5 down but he was then unlucky when holding a shot and promoted an opposing bowl to give the shot away. After this mishap the game slipped away from him with McMillan playing particularly well.
Coldstream's senior four of Norrie Erskine, Max Lowe, Robert Hamilton and Alan Mitchell were also beaten by the eventual championship winners, going down 21-6 to Stranraer West End in the quarter finals.
They had previously beaten Annan 21-11 in round one and Victoria Torrance of Glasgow 19-8 at the last 16 stage.
Ayton and District four of Paul Wilson, Ian Patterson, Mark Robertson and Robert Kerr also made it through round one, defeating Rutherglen 16-13. The Ayton four could not have had a better start building up a lead of 9-0. This did not last, however, and Ayton's lead was reduced to two shots at 11-9.
On the 12th end the lead was threatened with Rutherglen holding 3 shots. With his last bowl Kerr carried the jack through and picked up a vital single. This gave Ayton the confidence to claim victory.
However, Ayton exited the competition at round two when they were soundly beaten 26-4 by Danderhall. After two ends both teams had scored one shot, however, Ayton were soon in trouble at 8-1 down after five ends. On the sixth end they scored a single but their opponents then scored two counts of 3. Danderhall continued to pull further ahead and soon ended Ayton's brave challenge.
A Dunbar triple reached the quarter finals but lost 12-8 to Parkhead in the Scottish Championships, held at Ayr's Northfield Green.
