LOCAL racer Richard Reed is celebrating his first Scottish Championship success after winning this year's Sports and Saloon Car series.
Richard, who is 32, and who comes from Ancroft near Berwick, stepped up to compete in the series for the first time this season after three years of driving Ford Fiesta XR2s.
Behind the wheel of his Caterham, he contested the 12-race event which lasted from March through to October and took in the circuits at Knockhill, Croft and Silverstone.
"The Caterham is a 'road sport' model and is fitted with a 1600cc engine. It is lightweight and handles really well, particularly in the corners. Naturally I have been delighted with the way everything has worked out this year," he said.
Richard failed to win any of the races in the series - the best he achieved was fourth overall in one - but he won several of his Class E events, and as the series was run on a handicap system he collected enough points to land the overall title.
"The series was run by the Scottish Motor Racing Club," he said. "There were 30 cars on the grid so the competition was quite tough."
Having previously competed in motorcross as a schoolboy through to the age of 23, Richard has plenty of track experience, but at the moment he is undecided about his plans for next year.
"I could run in the same championship again," he said, "but there is also the option to step up to a higher level. I like driving the Caterham and the chances are if I do move up I would drive the same car again, but it would need to be modified to fall within the regulations."
