ON a windy but sunny day at Scremerston a small but enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch a rather one sided BSPC Border League match between Premier One outfit Melrose and National One side Berwick.
Border League
Berwick 0
Melrose 57

Melrose took the opportunity to give players who had been on the sidelines for much of the season a chance to get some game time, including back row man Ross Miller who has not appeared for the Greenyards outfit since the Cup Final back in May, but with players the calibre of John Dalziel included in the line up it was never going to be easy for the hosts. The brave Berwick boys suffered wave after wave of Melrose attacks throughout the 80 minutes, as the visitors battered their defensive line, but only really weakened in the closing quarter of the game.
Despite throwing everything they had at their hosts, Melrose only managed to rack up 24 points by half time with tries from Alec Jessop, Dougie Dodds, Joe Helps and James Lew plus two conversions from Scott Wight.
Berwick enjoyed some good spells of possession in the second half but could not find a way through. Centre Ben McCreath came closest but was denied a try by the Melrose defence right on the line.
The 'Rose assault continued with Kensak Palepoi, Nick Beavon, Dodds, Callum Anderson and Andy Thomson all adding to the scoreline. James King took over the kicking duties and managed four conversions.

Berwick: G. Hill; J. Patterson, B. McCreath, C. Young, M. Hackett; N. Graham, M. Laidlaw; R. Ayre, G. Black, J. Young, D. Gilchrist, G. Younger, A. Pearson, N. Law, R. Haggerston. Subs: P. Grahamslaw, R. Hume, L. Douglas.
