ALL roads led to Goswick last Wednesday where the Berwick club hosted one of the 16 regional qualifying rounds for this year's Open championship at Turnberry.
Ten places were up for grabs in the final qualifying rounds next Monday and Tuesday (July 6 and 7) at Glasgow, Gailes Links, Kilmarnock (Barassie) and Western Gailes, where 12 players - four at each venue - will make it through to Turnberry on July 16-19.

And there was good news for one local player in particular, with Bamburgh Castle's Garrick Porteous claiming one of the qualifying spots on offer after shooting a 71.

Porteous, who is playing as an amateur, finished three shots behind leading qualifiers Alexander Wrigley of Hartlepool and Craig Matheson of Falkirk Tryst, who both carded 68.

Other players to make it through included:
Keir McNicoll of Carnoustie and Alan Martin of Dunbar on 69, James Atkinson of Kendal and Mark Kerr of Golf Fit Ltd on 70, James Harper of Seaton Carew, David Kilpatrick of Grasslands and George Cowan of Westerhope, who like Porteous, all shot 71.

The four reserve slots went to: James Wilkinson of Brampton, Myles Cunningham of Craigielaw, Alistair Lauder of Paisley and Simon Lee of City of Newcastle, who all had 72.

Weather conditions on the day were ideal and the course was playing almost perfectly, but unfortunately a number of other local players just missed out, including David Clark of Morpeth, Daniel Wood of Eyemouth and Alexander Culverwell of Dunbar, who all fired 73.

Further back were Sean Jackson of Magdalene Fields on 77, Ewan Hogarth of Peebles on 78, and David Ord of Goswick, who found little by way of any home course advantage as he finished well down the field with a disappointing 84.
