DESPITE teams calling off (including Kelso the night before) a crowd of more than 200 dropped by throughout the day to watch some entertaining cricket at the Pier Field on Sunday.
With all the poor weather lately in the town (Berwick's home match on Saturday was cancelled) it was going to be a hit or miss as to whether or not it would take place, but thanks to the sterling effort of Mark Woodcock, the wicket was in reasonable
condition to play all the matches scheduled.
Last year's winners, Glasgow Accies, returned south to defend their title and were joined in battle by Gala, Strathearn - led by former home player Ivor Patterson - Alnwick, Berwick, who were the inaugural winners ,and the Renegades (really Berwick B) who formed at the last minute to replace Kelso.
So just after 10am, the two Berwick teams took to the field in glorious conditions to start what would be a marathon of cricket interspersed with lots of socialising at the bar and barbecue.
Berwick eased passed the Renegades and laid down the marker that they were after the title again after relinquishing it to Glasgow last year.
The sixes (87 in total) started to rain down all over the Pier Field and the surrounding tennis courts, the highlight being Lee Mark's superb 50 off only 14 balls against Alnwick.
The way the home team was playing, it was a case of who they would play in the final, although Gala provided a scare in the round robin stage until Martin Golightly knocked 22 off the final over.
It was the holders though who progressed through to the final, looking to avenge the 14 run defeat inflicted by the homesters earlier in the day.
At 7.30pm and 15 matches later, just after the club's junior cricketers held their annual presentations, Berwick batted first and found themselves in real trouble after only managing 49 runs.
With almost everybody watching thinking the holders would defend their crown, the grit, determination and winning mentality kicked in and Berwick, led by Rob Patterson - who claimed the vital opening wicket and also returned the day's best figures by only conceding two runs - fielded superbly and soon had the holders in serious trouble.
Four more overs of tight bowling and Berwick were the champions, leaving the captain, Scott Middlemist, to pick up the cup as well as the award for player of the day.
Whilst the cricket was played and the drink flowed, the hard work that had gone on for the previous three days could easily be forgotten, but all the helpers who put together the marquee and flooring, the Berwick WAGS who manned the bar and generally kept control, Dougal Moir, Chris Keenan (as well as doing an impressive and memorable MC routine) and Tim McCreath who flipped the burgers, Aubrey and Jason who played the tunes and George Thompson who did the day's scoring, all made the day even more enjoyable.
The wheels are in motion to make next year's sixes bigger and better.
Special mention though for Frank Furnese, who provided the flooring at the last minute, and the rugby club, which provided the marquee.
