And it was spot-kick hero Darren Gribben they had to thank as the striker, a one-time Forfar player, converted two penalties to take his goal tally for the season to four.
Gribben, despite the protestations of team-mate Fraser McLaren, kept his cool
to net once in each half, but it was not enough to earn the Rangers a much-needed victory.
For Forfar had taken the lead with a penalty of their own - ironically scored by former Berwick player Kevin McLeish - whilst substitute trialist Graham Gibson earned the visitors a draw with a late equaliser.
Athletic arrived having won their two previous away fixtures this season, but manager Dick Campbell admitted afterwards that he was left feeling more than a little disappointed at his team's showing.
He even went so far as to complain about the length of the grass.
"It was too long," he said, "and not conducive to passing football."
Berwick manager Alan McGonigal countered by saying: "The pitch was perfect. It was like a carpet if you compare it to the Albion surface last week.
"I know Forfar like to keep their pitch tightly cut, but I think they are just looking for excuses. In any event, they have the ball in the air so much I don't think the length of the grass makes any difference to their play."
The game got off to a slow start, but it was Berwick who had the best of the early chances.
David Greenhill shot over from just outside the box and then a Gribben free kick was tipped over the top by goalkeeper Ally Brown.
But in the 21st minute Rangers fell behind to a McLeish penalty after central defender Jamie Ewart was well beaten for pace and bundled over Jonathon Russell as he bore down on goal.
He earned a booking from referee Euan Norris, but was fortunate in that some officials might have deemed him the last line of defence and shown him a straight red.
Berwick front man Jim Lister - still searching for his first goal in the black and gold - had one of his better games for the club, and less than a minute later he shot into the side netting at the other end.
Gribben then took the ball down in the box, but he scuffed his shot in front of goal, although it still had Brown scrambling across his line.
Lister then headed against the bar, but in the 42nd minute he got some reward for his efforts when he made a surging run into the box only to be brought down by David Dunn.
McLaren, who scored from the penalty spot on his debut at the end of last season, tried to take the ball from Gribben, but there was no way the striker was giving up the opportunity and after pushing his team-mate aside he scored confidently to the keeper's right.
At the start of the second half Andy McLean headed over from a Gribben corner whilst Stephen Tulloch hit the post at the other end as Forfar tried to counter.
Derek Lilley then shot wide from inside the box, but Steven Bonar was starting to make an impression on the game and on the hour mark he played in a delicate chip for Lister who just couldn't stretch far enough in front of goal.
Seconds later Craig Anderson was floored in the box by Sean Kilgannon and Gribben made it 2-1 from the spot, this time scoring to the keeper's left.
Not long afterwards McLaren had a great opportunity to make it 3-1 when he broke down the right, but under pressure from a defender his shot was well saved by Brown who rushed off his line and spread himself well.
Almost immediately Campbell reacted by making two substitutions and it was one of them, Gibson, who grabbed a 79th minute equaliser when he got behind McLean, knocked the ball past Ryan McGurk and then squeezed the ball in from a tight angle.
Chances were being created at both ends and Gribben had a chance of his hat-trick but shot over the top.
Afterwards, Campbell said he thought Berwick had been awarded two 'soft' penalties, but he said a draw was all his team deserved as they had not played to their full potential.
Berwick - McGurk 6, Guy 6, Lennox 7, Ewart 7, McLean 6, Bonar 7, Mclaren 6, Craig Anderson 6 (Callaghan 76), Gribben 7, Lister 7 (Dillon 81), Greenhill 6.
