SCOTT Middlemist is to continue as captain of Berwick Cricket Club 1st XI. It will be his fourth year in the role, but he is also to take on the dual responsibility as groundsman, replacing the outgoing Mark Woodcock, who has been forced to stand down because of work commitments.
Under Middlemist's guidance Berwick have made steady progress through the Northumberland Leagues over the past few seasons, and he will be looking for further improvement next year.
Meanwhile, the 2nd XI will be captained by David Wakenshaw in 201
0, after he was voted in at the AGM. He replaces the outgoing Chris Keenan, who is stepping down after three years.
Wakenshaw will have senior figures, and past captains, such as Brian Simmons, Iain Thomson and Tim McCreath to call upon for advice.
He will be captaining the side in the new 20/20 competition which has been added to the ADL. The introduction of the new 20/20 will see the league take a four week break, with the 20/20 games replacing the Saturday fixtures. The league sides will be divided into regional groups, and the top two teams from each group will qualify for a finals day.
During 2009, following a lot of interest both from inside and outside the club, a women's section was formed.
The club held regular coaching sessions which attracted a good turn-out and next season they are looking to expand further with additional training and the organisation of a number of matches.
The club are also proud to announce the launch of a new website. It will contain the usual information, including fixtures, history of the club and photographs from games and events.
The new website will be introducing a player profile section, discussing players' nicknames, hobbies, best figures and honours.
The website will be launched in January and is available at www.berwickcc.com.
