THE first disabled games organised at the sports centre by Berwick Rotary Club on Sunday were such a success that plans are to be laid immediately for 2009 - with the hope that the response is even larger.
A total of 175 people from a wide area were involved as competitors and helpers in a day-long event embracing eight disciplines.
Rotary president Michael Richardson said afterwards that they had run the games as a fun day.
"Everyone has enjoyed it," he said. "We are very pleased with the generous sponsorship from Three Rivers Housing Association, the tremendous co-operation of the sports centre staff and all the support we received that has given us great confidence that we should go ahead again next year."
He also thanked Henry Gray of Eyemouth swimming pool who ran the swimming events, Ian Wakenshaw who helped with the curling, Bill Nesbit and Ancroft Hall bowlers and Berwick Air Training Corps.
The entire centre was in use for the games which gave the disabled of all ages an opportunity to participate and to make friends.
The Rotary Club will be sponsoring a Berwick team to the disabled games in Middlesbrough in July.
Trophies were presented by Mr Richardson at a poolside ceremony.
Results were:
New Age Kurling - 1 Kevin Blair, 2 Laura Patterson; Endeavour - Robert Fawcus;
Carpet bowls - 1 Donald Metcalf, 2 James Walker; Endeavour - Alison Reid;
