Northern Social v Berwick
BERWICK claimed maximum points to maintain their advantage at the top of the Three Counties Northumberland League division one with just three games of the season remaining.
Travelling to Ashington on Saturday to take on Northern Social, the home side won the toss and elected to make first use of a slow pitch offering little in the way of bounce for the bowlers.
After the loss of three early wickets, Northern Social looked set to post a challenging total when they reached 82-3 shortly after the drinks interval.
Whatever was in the mid-innings refreshments certainly spurred the Berwick bowlers on. The remaining seven wickets were taken for just 26 runs as the home side was dismissed for just 108.
All four of Berwick's bowlers contributed.
Mark Woodcock put in a tight early spell, taking 1-33, but much of the credit for pegging the Northern batsmen back must go to John Benn and John Simmons.
Benn claimed 3-15, going a little more than a run an over, while Simmons' spell was just as tight, his three wickets costing just 25.
After an early blast, skipper Scott Middlemist returned late on and finished with figures of 3-31.
In reply, Middlemist and Benn hit a flurry of boundaries as they looked to make quick work of the modest target.
But with the skipper out bowled, Benn caught at deepish point and Elliott being adjudged LBW for a duck, the reply stuttered at 37-3.
It was left to Martin Golightly and Stuart Laundy to dig in and rebuild the innings, which they did in accomplished fashion, taking advantage of any loose deliveries as the Northern skipper rotated his bowlers in an effort to make another breakthrough.
An unbroken partnership of 72 saw Berwick home, with Laundy ending unbeaten on 46 and Golightly on 20.
Table - Berwick 271, Blagdon 263, Stobswood 237, Northern Social 176, Monkseaton 166, Tynemouth 117, Civil Service 102, Belsay 67.
Tillside v Shilbottle
IN the Alnwick and District League, leaders Tillside suffered their first defeat of the season when they were beaten by second placed Shilbottle.
Tillside batted first and put on 95 with D Robertson making 31. A Straker took 3-27.
This was a low target and was always with-in Shilbottle's grasp and with Straker going on to make an unbeaten 56 with the bat Shilbottle finished on 96-1 and won by nine wickets.
Berwick II v Mitford
BERWICK slipped to a disappointing two wicket defeat at the hands on Mitford on Saturday.
Berwick batted first and made 118, but Mitford took the winning points by posting a score of 119-8.
