BERWICK battler Liam Holborn came second in Total Combat's four man mixed martial arts tournament.
DFM Reiver MMA Liam, who was recently named Sports Personality of the Year in Berwick, was fighting the 33rd of the Total Combat series, the largest MMA competition in the North of England. It was held at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring, Co
unty Durham, with the British Light Heavyweight title and £2000 cash up for grabs.
Known as 'The Hybrid,' Liam fights out of DFM Reivers MMA club, Northumberland's premier fight group.
He faced a very experienced Lanus Jones in the final after he demolished opponent Chris Liddle, ending the fight in 30 seconds with a takedown, heavy right hook and a tight guillotine choke, forcing the tap.
Lanus's first opponent was Ian 'Super' Cooper, who comes out of a boxing background. And it showed in the opening of the first round when Cooper burst in to action with a left hook combination which Jones expertly exploited with a shoot in and slammed Cooper to the ground.
Now in his domain, Jones overcame Cooper's defences, took mount and began to ground 'n' pound with his opponent against the cage. Cooper was forced by the relentless barrage to tap out, giving Jones his first victory in 1.39 minutes of round one.
In the final facing Jones, Holborn started with quick hand work, took the clinch and forced Jones into the fence. Jones retaliated with an explosive sweep taking The Hybrid to the ground and snatched the mount.
Pushing Holborn to the fence Jones began to ground and pound. He turned Holborn, who attempted to escape but was caught with a tight rear naked choke and tapped out handing Lanus the title.
The DFM Reivers' MMA team will next be in action at the Battle At Boulmer kickboxing and mixed martial arts event held at RAF Boulmer, Alnwick, on Friday, March 12. Liam will be entering in the K-1 kickboxing against Kyle Craig of the Aikikickboxing gym on Tyneside.
A bus will run from behind The Playhouse from 6pm and will bring guest back to the centre of Alnwick after the fight. This costs £1.50. Further details - contact: darren.currah@martialnews.co.uk
