TYNEMOUTH v BERWICK
BERWICK made a successful start to their Northumberland League Division One campaign with a very comfortable 147 run victory at Tynemouth on Saturday.
After being asked to bat first on a very slow soft wicket, patience was the watchword for openers Scott Middlemist and Martyn Elliott. Together they put on 98 for the first wicket before Elliott was caught off the bowling of Coates for a useful 44.
Middlemist was joined at the crease by Martin Golightly and together took the score to 196 for one at the end of the allotted fifty overs. Middlemist paced his innings to perfection to end 102 not out while Golightly was the catalyst for some good running between the wickets in the final few overs to end unbeaten on 30.
In reply Tynemouth were never at the races with only Wilson reaching double figures as the father and son opening attack of Mark and Jordan Woodcock skittled the home side for only 49. Family honour ended even as both the Woodcock's ended with five wickets as Tynemouth were dismissed with half of their overs still remaining.
* BERWICK 2nds kicked off their Alnwick & District League matches with a home win over Red Row on Saturday.
Batting first Berwick recorded, 154 for 2 from their 45 overs with experienced openers John Benn and Tim McCreath recording 74 and 49 respectively.
In reply Red Row looked like they were cruising when openers Black (45) and Mackenzie (37) put on 70 for the first wicket but the introduction of Benn and new recruit Jeff Wilson sparked a collapse and the visitors were all out for 105. Benn finished with 4 for 25 and Wilson 4 for 12 with Dominic McCreath picking up the other wicket.
BELSAY v BERWICK
BERWICK easily negotiated the first round of the Wilson Cup with an easy ten wicket victory at Belsay.
Asked to bat first on a difficult wicket the home side were skittled for 36. Scott Middlemist and John Simmons both ended with figures of 3-5 whilst Middlemist also engineered three run-outs as a poor Belsay side completely lost their way.
In reply Berwick cruised to victory in the 6th over with Lee Mark unbeaten on 22 and Martin Golightly 11 not out.
