For with Cowdenbeath earning a 1-1 draw at Ayr, it means Rangers are now 15 points adrift of the Fifers at the bottom of the table, and with only five games remaining the maths is simple.
The Central Park outfit now only require one point from thei
r remaining six fixtures to send Michael Renwick's side back to where they hence came.
And it has to be said that this is perhaps no more than they deserve, for this season the Black and Gold has only been a pale shadow of the side which lit up the third division in the two seasons previous, culminating of course in the championship success only a year ago.
They have been continually outplayed, and this was evident once again when they took to the pitch at Glebe Park for this fixture.
The sides had drawn each of their three previous fixtures this season, and after a 2-1 victory at Cowdenbeath last weekend - their first away win of the season and only their third of the campaign - Rangers had every right to feel confident.
But once again the stuffing was knocked out of them when they were well beaten by a Brechin side, who after an equally disastrous start to the season, are now pushing for a play-off spot.
It was former Rangers' favourite Drren Smith who hammered the first nail into the coffin when he fired in the opener from the edge of the box after 24 minutes.
And when Adam Nelson drove in a second only three minutes later it was obvious it was going to be another hard day at the office for Renwick and his battle-weary troops.
John Ward headed in a Kevin Byres corner just two minutes into the second half, and as City continued to exert their complete authority, Charlie King made it 4-0 after 66 minutes when he converted a well struck free kick.
Rangers were on the rack at this stage and with just under half an hour remaining some fans were already envisaging another victory of unthinkable proportions.
However, Berwick managed to hang out until the 83rd minute when Calum Smith shot into an empty net after Nicky Walker challenged goalkeeper Chris Flockhart.
Rangers now take on Peterhead at Shielfield on Saturday, and it could be that it will be the side who inflicted a 9-2 defeat on them earlier in the season - the second biggest in the club's history - who are responsible for hammering home the final nail.
Nothing short of a victory will do if Berwick are to keep the flame flickering . . . but on current form the chances are it will be snuffed out completely.
That in itself might not be a bad thing - for with relegation confirmed there is no reason why the club should not start to rebuild for the future.
After the game manager Michael Renwick said Grant McNicoll, who went off with a hamstring injury after 24 minutes, is now likely to miss the rest of the season.
"After he went off, we were 2-0 down within two minutes and it was effectively game over," he said.
"Brechin played very well and we can have no complaints about the defeat because we continue to make too many mistakes."
Renwick said the rebuilding for next season starts now and he is looking for young players 'with ability and heart.'
Berwick hope to have Ian Little back for Saturday's match against Peterhead, and gary Wood may also feature in the squad.
Berwick - Flockhart, Manson (Lennox 77), McNicoll (Horn 24), Tolmie, McMullan, Fairbairn, Thomson, Greenhill, Mcleish, Howatt (Stevenson 71), Gemmill.
