GUY Learmonth from Berwick was in outstanding form at the Inter Regional Championships held at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, at the weekend.
Learmonth won the A race 800m in a new Scottish junior record time of 1min 51.29, defeating his main rival, Graham Oudney of Dundee, who is trained by Liz McColgan. This performance was regarded by Scottish Athletics as the performance of the day.

Learmonth was last week awarded the most improved athlete of the year on the 'Black Shields' rankings list for 2009, and he will receive a major prize from Puma. He also now goes to the top of the British rankings for 2010 and could well be selected for the Great Britain team for the forthcoming Aviva International at the Kelvin Hall in two weeks time.

He would like to thank his new sponsor Mainetti of Jedburgh for all their help.

Patrick Swan of Chirnside was also in superb form winning the A race 400m in a superb time of 48.69. The Great Britain U23 international is hoping to make the Great Britain team for the World Indoor Championships in Doha, Quatar.

Swan and Learmonth have been training together over the Christmas period and it paid off for both of them at the weekend. As all the tracks have been frozen for weeks, they have had to improvise their training, and have trained on Eyemouth promenade and beach, Eyemouth swimming pool and gym (thanks to Border Sport and Leisure Trust) and also Spittal beach.

Three of the athletes trained by Henry Gray junior and his late father Henry Gray senior now hold four Scottish records - Ian Horsburgh of Ayton still holds the U20s 200m and now Guy holds the U20s 800m. Kris Stewart from Chirnside still holds the Scottish U17 records for the 200mt and the 400m.

Learmonth was not the only Longridge Towers pupil to do well last week - it was the first round of the English schools cross country county qualifiers which were held at the school and Alison Brown had a superb run to finish in first place. Hannah Jones and her twin sister Emily came in first and second, Matthew Grundy finished in third, and Jack Learmonth and Anna Grundy ran well to qualify for the next round. Berwick High School pupils Laura Anderson finished in a fine third place as did Cieran Turton.
