BERWICK BANDITS .....45
KING'S LYNN STARS ....45

A WEEK which should have been the busiest in Berwick's season, culminating in their live TV appearance on Sky, ended up as a major disappointment for everyone connected with the club.
The Bandits were originally scheduled to compete in five matches in a six day period, with the icing on the cake being a live TV broadcast at the Isle of Wight on Tuesday.
But following the tragic death of Newport owner Tim Stone, the club's visit to Wales was put on hold, and then both their visits to Reading on Monday and the IOW the following evening were switched at short notice.
The Reading and IOW postponements still leave a bad taste in the mouth for promoter Peter Waite, but at the end of the day there was little he could do about it, and it left his side with only two fixtures - away to Redcar on Thursday and home to King's Lynn on Saturday.
New signing Benny Johansson, signed as a replacement for Birmingham bound Henning Bager, failed to show up at Teesside as he was caught up in heavy traffic en-route from Sweden.
As a result Bandits drafted in Conference League guest Gary Beaton, but he failed to score in three outings and Berwick went down 51-41.
Johansson finally made his debut in the home league match against King's Lynn 48 hours later, but he failed to impress in a 45-45 draw and afterwards Waite admitted his performance was a worry.
"It was an excellent meeting, but we really were lucky to get a draw," he said, "proving again that we are just not strong enough yet.
"It's still early days for Benny, but it was concerning to see him so far off the pace, but maybe now he's had a match here he'll improve soon.
"With King's Lynn a star man down it was disappointing that we couldn't capitalise, but we know what is needed for the future.
"The only consolation is that we are still top of the table, a place we desperately want to stay."
King's Lynn secured an unexpected draw against table-topping Berwick at Shielfield. The result was unexpected in as much as the Stars lost the services of one of their top riders - guest Shane Parker who was deputising for the injured Kevin Doolan - after a first bend crash in heat one.
Parker's subsequent rider-replacement outings only mustered one point, and for a rider with a proven record at the track that was way below what he would normally have been expected to achieve.
But the Bandits, already using rider replacement for broken collarbone victim Guglielmo Franchetti, gave a debut to new signing Benny Johansson, who struggled to adapt to the pace of Premier League racing in his first outing in this country.
And with Adam McKinna again finding points difficult to come by, Berwick, not for the first time over the past few weeks, found themselves effectively only a four-man team.
But Adrian Rymel and Michal Makovsky were not as dominant as they have been in recent matches, and with Tero Aarnio and Norbert Magosi the only other home riders showing anything like their best form, the visitors outscored them 9-6 in the winners' stakes.
It was no surprise that Tom Topinka won four of his five starts, beaten only by Aarnio in heat seven. Rusty Harrison and Shaun Tacey both also weighed in with valuable victories, as did Kozza Smith in heat two. But it was a shock heat 14 win by Simon Lambert - he had previously only managed two third places - which levelled the match up at 42-42, taking the meeting to a last heat decider.
Earlier, despite Parker's tangle with Magosi which left the Glasgow man with wrist and shoulder injuries, King's Lynn made the better start and after four races they found themselves 15-9 in front.
Berwick hit back with two successive 5-1's to regain the initiative at 19-17, but the next four races were all drawn as the score moved on to 31-29, with Topinka producing a tremendous back straight burst to pass both Magosi and Rymel.
A 4-2 from Tacey and Smith in 11 levelled it up at 33-all and there was still no separating the sides as the riders went to the tapes for the all-important heat 15.
Harrison failed to get off the start, but Topinka made the gate, and despite tremendous pressure from Rymel for four laps he managed to hold on for a victory which gave his side a deserved share of the spoils.
Berwick - Aarnio 13+1, Rymel 12+1, Makovsky 10+1, Magosi 8+1, Johansson 1+1, McKinna 1+1; King's Lynn - Topinka 14, Harrison 8, Smith 8, Tacey 8, Lambert 5+1, Oliver 2+1, Parker 0.
* THIS weekend Berwick take on the Isle of Wight at Shielfield. The Islanders have been one of the Bandits' bogey teams in recent seasons, but the loss of top man Chris Holder to the Elite League means they are not as strong at the top end as they once were, and Peter Waite's side will be looking to pick up the league points which are on offer.
