IT was a good week for Berwick with a stunning win at Birmingham on Wednesday, followed by a classic derby clash against old rivals Edinburgh at Shielfield on Saturday.
The Bandits, courtesy of a superb 15-point maximum from Adrian Rymel, and a paid 16 return from Paul Clews, won 48-42 in the second city.
But they almost undid all the good work at home three days later when they only just managed to scrape a draw against the championship-chasing Monarchs.
"It really was a little bit too close for comfort," said promoter Peter Waite.
"After winning at Birmingham, which was a great result as far as we were concerned, I knew we were in for a tough meeting against Edinburgh.
"They had already won here twice this season so I was expecting it to be close, but I still thought we might just have enough to sneak it.
"In the end I suppose we have to be thankful for the draw, because we were four points down going into the last race, but it's still disappointing to drop a point at home."

BERWICK BANDITS ...........................................48
BERWICK pulled off a sensational away victory at Birmingham last week to complete a league 'double' over the Brummies.
And what made it all the more remarkable was the fact that two Bandits' riders - Scott Smith and the re-called Guglielmo Franchetti - both failed to score any points at all.
Berwick's top two were unquestionably Adrian Rymel and reserve Paul Clews.
Rymel, who had been forced to withdraw from the meeting at Rye House the previous Sunday after just one ride with a recurring knee problem, stormed to a full 15-point maximum . . . something which will have the statisticians thumbing through the record books to try and find the last time a Berwick rider achieved that particular feat.
And Clews, who moves up to the main body of the team in the new averages in August, was beaten only once in six starts as he weighted in with a fine 15+1.
Tero Aarnio also contributed a useful 8+1, while Michal Makovsky and Norbert Magosi both won one of their four heats.
In all, the Bandits provided 12 of the 15 race winners as they became the fourth team to win at Perry Bar in the league this year. The victory also lifted them one place in the table to eighth.
Italian Franchetti, who started the season with Berwick, but was replaced following two broken collarbone injuries, had been drafted in in place of Tony Atkin, who was released following a run of poor form.
Like Smith, he failed to score in three outings, but he drops to reserve in the new averages and promoter Peter Waite is hopeful that will help him settle back into life in the PL again.
Birmingham - Birkenshaw 11+1, Lyons 10+2, Watson 9+2, Legault 6+1, Roberts 3+2, Hargreaves 3+1. Berwick - Clews 15+1, Rymel 15, Aarnio 8+1, Makovsky 5+1, Magosi 5, Franchetti 0, Smith 0.
BERWICK BANDITS ...........................................45
EDINBURGH MONARCHS ................................45
IT was honours even in this tense local derby, with the result in doubt right up to the final heat.
Edinburgh had already won twice at Shielfield this season, and they were looking for a hat-trick to maintain their title push.
Twice Berwick led by six points at 21-15 and 27-21, but on each occasion the battling Monarchs pegged them back.
It was all square at 33-33 after 11, but when the visitors came from two down at 37-35 to lead by four at 40-44 with one race remaining, the writing looked to be on the wall for Peter Waite's men.
This was a meeting which had fans on the edge of their seats from start to finish and in a nail-biting finale Berwick guest Travis McGowan and Michal Makovsky, after being outgated by Thomas Jonasson and Matthew Weathers, both forced their way through from the back to secure what had looked an unlikely draw for the home side.
Jonasson took a nastly tumble, his second in successive outings after he had earlier crashed coming out of the second bend in heat 11, but thankfully he was able to walk away unscathed.
There was nothing between the sides in the early exchanges, Berwick holding a slender two-point advantage at 16-14 after five.
But Paul Clews produced a barnstorming ride around the boards to pass Ryan Fisher and join McGowan on a 5-1 in six and suddenly Berwick had some breathing space.
But in the very next race Jonasson and Wethers replied in kind to cancel out Berwick's advantage, although in eight Clews did it again, this time passing Sneddon, following Scott Smith home for another 5-1.
But back came Edinburgh again. First of all a 2-4 with Fisher winning brought it back to 29-25. Jonasson won a shared heat in ten before Sneddon and guest Josef Franc got the better of Smith and an out of sorts Tero Aarnio, which levelled it up at 33-33.
Makovsky won the re-run of 12 after Jonasson's tumble and with Guglielmo Franchetti following Andrew Tully home, the Bandits were back in front at 37-35.
Fisher and Franc squeezed out McGowan at the start of 13 and a 5-1 for the Monarchs saw them take the lead for the first time at 38-40. They extended that in the penultimate heat with Wethers and aaron Summers being split by Smith, but McGowan and Makovsky came to Berwick's rescue at the death for what was a deserved share of the spoils.
Berwick - Makovsky 13, McGowan 11, Smith 9+1, Clews 6+3, Franchetti 4, Aarnio 2+1, Magosi 0; Edinburgh - Jonasson 8, Sneddon 8, Wethers 7+2, Fisher 7, Tully 6, Franc 5+1, Summers 4.
