BERWICK UTD ................... 0
KILLINGWORTH YPC ......... 3
BERWICK United slipped to second bottom of the RE/MAX Northern Alliance Division 1 table following a heavy defeat at windswept Newfields on Saturd
ay.
The match probably should not have been played given the horrendous conditions but the referee decided otherwise.
Both teams found it difficult to keep possession and there were few clean-cut chances in the early stages but the visitors took the lead with five minutes of the first half remaining.
There seemed little danger but the United defence failed to clear its lines and the ball eventually bobbled its way to Killingworth's centre forward who fired home.
After the break, Killingworth pressed forward looking for that killer second goal and it duly came, albeit in fortuitous circumstances when a shot ricocheted off Paul Richardson and wrong-footed the goalkeeper to find its way into the net.
Berwick then had their best spell of the match and set up camp in the opposition half thanks to good midfield play from Paul Ward. Walker, Hugh and Robertson began to cause the Killingworth back four plenty of problems but they lacked composure in front of goal.
With 30 seconds remaining the visitors grabbed a third when a stray throw out from the 'keeper fell to their centre forward who made no mistake.
Manager Ian Knox said: "We fought and battled hard in atrocious conditions but the luck wasn't with us. Hopefully things will turn around for us soon and we'll be able to pick up a few results."

North Northumberland

THE NFA Minor Cup fixtures took a bit of a hammering as a result of the weather at the weekend, but there were still good wins for Lowick (4-3 away to Benfield) and Bamburgh (2-0 at home to Alnmouth United).
Anthony Murray netted a hat-trick for Lowick with Gary Fairbairn their other scorer in a close game against Chemfica.
Meanwhile, Bamburgh had Ryan Thompson and Gary Annison to thank for their goals which saw them through.
In the league, games were also few and far between.
Belford went down to a 4-0 away defeat at Alnwick Town Reserves, Berwick United Reserves went down 2-1 away to Lynemouth, whilst Berwick Town Reserves hit Hedgeley for six with a 6-3 away win.
Belford were always struggling in their match at Alnwick where they found themselves 3-0 down at the break. They fared slightly better in the second half, but a fourth goal wrapped up all three points for the home side.
Berwick United Reserves fell behind after only five minutes of their game at Lynemouth, and that was the only goal which separated the sides at the break.
Lewis Rutherford equalised early in the second half and whilst both sides created further chances it wasn't until the 88th minute that the home side snatched a late winner.
Hedgeley held their own against Berwick Town Reserves in the first half. Stephen Shendon fired the home side in front, but Ben Punton equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time.
However, in the second half Berwick upped the pace and a hat-trick from Robert Armstrong and two from Thiago Ferreira saw United return with the spoils.

Border Amateur

ANCRUM ..............................2
TWEEDMOUTH AMS ..........1
THANKS to Gregor Cummings, Tweedmouth's match secretary, the game was re-arranged to an away fixture because the home pitch was unplayable.
The team repaid him with a less than average display. Ancrum played with a lot of heart and they opened the scoring after a mistake in the visitors' defence let their centre forward in to slot the ball past Paulson.
Tweedmouth changed a few things around at half-time and had a lot more possession. They had the ball in the net three times, but were ruled out on each occasion.
Ancrum scored their second when Tweedmouth failed to clear their lines and the home forward found the net from an acute angle.
Grieve and Blackhall both had headers just over the bar, but they finally managed to make the breakthrough in the very last minute when Drummond's long throw landed at the feet of Robertson who made no mistake from a yard out.
The defeat marked the end of Tweedmouth's unbeaten league run and they will now have to get back to basics and learn to battle hard in every game if they are to find any success this season.

TWEEDMOUTH COLTS ..... 0
LAUDER .............................. 4
THE Colts were the architects of their own downfall in this match, one of the few played because of high winds and rain in the area.
The damage was done in the first half when Lauder had the benefit of the wind at their backs. They took the lead when a shot from the edge of the penalty area went in off the post. A second came when an inswinging corner was dropped at the foot of a striker and a third was added when indecision between a defender and the goalkeeper allowed the Lauder striker to nip in.
The second half was a much more even affair with Colts pressing but Lauder dangerous on the break.
There were no more goals until the final five minutes when Dixon failed to clear his lines and a Lauder striker made it four.
Despite the defeat there were bright spots for the Colts in the form of Steele who worked hard throughout and Clark who impressed on his debut.
