DISABLED competitors from Berwick set a new record on Sunday when they returned from the Rotary Games at Middlesbrough with 11 gold and silver medals.
They were sponsored by Berwick Rotary Club who provided the bus and the food for 50 competitors and their carers. The guests included the Mayor of Berwick, Coun Hazel Bettison.
The vice-chairman of the community service committee, George Miller told the club on Tuesday it had been a fantastic day and the Berwick team had acquitted itself very well.
He thanked District 1030 for organising the event, Middlesbrough FC for the use of their excellent facilities, Elizabeth Dryden, chairman of the Berwick Disabled and the carers for their expertise.
Berwick's medal winners were Doreen Wilson (carpet bowls winner), James Walker (Boccia champion), Laura Patterson (archery champion), Donald Metcalf, Jennifer Fallon (archery), Ian Wakenshaw (discus, javelin), Marc Dawson (swimming), Kevin Blair (bowls), Jean Majurly (new age Kurling, wheelchair section).
It has been revealed that Rotary had been asked to organise the 'Berwick's Got Talent' competition which is being held at Spittal on August 10. AS a result, it had been decided not to hold the musician of the year contest this year, but several who ttok part in it will be participating in the Spittal event, the brainchild of the Mayor.
Three weeks later, Rotary's own major fund-raising event will be held at the Chain Bridge Honey Farm. This year, for the first time, the popular T J Johnson Band and Phil Bailey - who entertains on the Sunday - will give a concert which will be held in Coldstream.
John Lackenby was thanked for his work on the club's charity coffee morning in the Guildhall. It raised £954 - slightly above the 2007 total.
Tom Wakenshaw, vice-chairman of the youth service committee, reported that the club would be sponsoring two young people at the Rotary Youth Leaders course at Alnmouth next month.
It was also agreed to pay for a candidate to join the sailing ship 'James Cook' on a voyage later this year. Berwick Rotary hoped that from now on they would sponsor one local youngster on the ship every year.
