A new festival launched to celebrate the great outdoors has been pronounced a big success, with organisers already planning another one next year.

Despite bad weather at the start of Wooler Outdoor Week last Thursday there was a good turn-out for most of the activities.

“A couple of events were affected by the weather but the activities that people did they really enjoyed,” said organiser Maxine Lock.

“Everybody that came along said how fantastic it was. Events like the archery went really well and there was a good turnout for the talk and the film. It was definitely a success and we are already talking about next year and have lots of good ideas to make it even better.”

Co-organiser Karl Wait added: “The rain held off for most of the events and it was great to see big smiles on the faces of all the kids and adults who took part as they were really enjoying it and really got something out of it.

“A lot of them said they were going to contact the providers of the activities afterwards so they could arrange something independently which is exactly what we wanted to happen.”

The aim of the festival is to encourage more people to enjoy outdoor activities and there were taster sessions in mountain biking, kayaking, fell running, archery, gliding, and hill walking.

Karen Singleton, who took part in the fell running, said afterwards: “I had a lovely run this morning as part of the Wooler Outdoor Week.

“I can’t think of a better way to experience the most beautiful countryside with enough muddy puddles to satisfy my inner five-year-old!

“Thank you to Wooler Running Club for excellent organisation and great company. See you next year!”
