Village cemetery almost full

Belford residents may not be able to be buried in the village, as the cemetery has almost reached its capacity.

It was revealed at last week’s meeting of the parish council that there are only a few plots left at the cemetery.

There is space at Tweedmouth and Lucker, but Parish Councillor Ian (Reg) Carruthers said: “People want to be buried here. It’s something we seriously need to look at.

“How long do we want to leave it for? We don’t want to wait until it’s full.”

Coun Geoff O’Connell added that Lucker wasn’t even on a bus route, and said: “We need to talk about it soon, or we will have no space in this village. The cemetery is seriously under pressure and it’s not going to go away.”

Coun Carruthers said he would find out from the vicar exactly how many plots were left at the cemetery. The parish council also agreed to ask the relevant person from Northumberland County Council to come and talk to them about possible solutions.
