Sections of the A1 are closed in both directions south of Belford after a wagon containing gas canisters was on fire in the Newham area.
Police received a report at 1.53pm this afternoon (Tuesday) that a wagon containing gas canisters was on fire on the A1 Belford bypass.
Police and fire service are currently at the scene and it is believed that no one has been injured in the incident.
A section of the A1 in both directions is closed and officers expect it to be for some time.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use the diversions that have been put in place.
Northbound traffic is being diverted at the Denwick turn off and southbound at Adderstone services.
HGVs and larger vehicles traveling north are being diverted off the A1 at the A697 at Fairmoor, Morpeth.
HGVs travelling southbound are being diverted at Fenwick.
- Cars and other vehicles travelling south are being diverted off the A1 at Adderstone Services onto the B1341to Bamburgh. They are then heading south on the coastal route to join the A1 via Christon Bank.
