Conservatives have welcomed the overwhelming public support for free parking shown at a public meeting in Berwick.
Coun Peter Jackson, leader of Northumberland Conservatives, said: “We have been fighting to get rid of this extra tax on local residents for years.
“We could never understand why the Lib Dems when they were the ruling party were determined to persist with car parking charges in Berwick when it was free in most other towns. Eventually the Labour Group came round to our view and we are pleased that this source of unfairness will eventually be taken away.”
Coun Tom Forrester, chairman of Berwick Conservatives, added: “The scrapping of car parking charges in Berwick will allow the town to compete on a level playing field.”
