A CHRISTMAS decoration designed by a 13-year-old boy in his school holidays has taken pride of place in a Tweedmouth street.

Berwick Academy first year pupil Jaques Doolan designed and made this quirky, eight-foot long image of Santa and his sleigh during October half term.

And now the image, which is standing proud in his garden, has formed the centre piece for the Roddam Court Christmas decorations.

Jaques’ dad Maurice Doolan explained: “He had a week’s holiday from school and he had nothing to do, so I downloaded some pictures of Santa and his sleigh, and asked him if he’d draw one for me - he’s quite a keen drawer so he said yes.

“What he didn’t realise was that I’d bought an eight by four foot piece of plywood that I wanted him to draw it on!

“When I got the wood out at first he laughed because he thought I was kidding.”

But, having been persuaded that his dad was serious, Jaques was undaunted, and put his mind to the task at hand, designing a cartoon-style Santa and reindeer that would best translate on a large scale.

Jaques rose to the challenge of transferring the image from his imagination, to the huge sheet of plywood, and spent two days in the garage, perfecting his design.

“It took him about two days to draw it, then I cut it out with the jigsaw,” Maurice said.

“I’d already got paints and we then spent another couple of days painting it together.”

Both Jaques and Maurice were pleased with the final result which is full of character, showing a cheeky Reindeer pulling a bright and bold Santa in his sleigh.

“He likes drawing and he loves cartoons, he always draws them, but usually on sheets of paper, not eight by four pieces of plywood!” Maurice said. “He’d done really well, we had a switch on of all the lights on the street on December 1 and the Santa and sleigh looked great in the garden.

“He’s really pleased with it, especially with everyone coming up and saying how well he’s done - in fact some of the neighbours are asking if he’ll make things for them for next year!”
