The Grade II listed property where the Earl of Surrey reputedly stayed prior to the Battle of Flodden has gone on the market.
Surrey House, formerly The George Inn, is located next to the A697 at Haugh Head, one and a half miles south of Wooler.
Andrew Aitchison, selling agent, said: “We are delighted to bring to the market Surrey House, which is a Grade II listed building of historical interest.
“This 15th century detached stone built house was formally ‘The George Inn’ where it is reputed that the Earl of Surrey stayed prior to the Battle of Flodden.”
Commemorations were held across the Borders last week to mark the 500th anniversary of the battle, which took place on September 9, 1513 and led to the death of 15,000 Scots and English soldiers, 100 noblemen and the Scottish King, James IV.
The Earl of Surrey, who led the English army, had expected to lead the 1513 expedition to France, but was left behind when King Henry VIII departed for Calais on June 30, 1513.
Shortly thereafter James IV launched an invasion, and Surrey headed north. He is said to have stayed at Surrey House for several days and nights while parleys between the English and Scots took place before the battle.
“The property has just come on to the market and really it could hardly have been better times given all the publicity that Flodden has been getting,” said Mr Aitchison.
The local community has raised concerns in recent years about the deteriorating condition of such a historic building.
Mr Aitchison admitted: “The property is in need of total refurbishment, however, it does offer tremendous potential.
“The new owner will have the flexibility to purchase the house with a good sized garden, with the option to buy more land if required. It forms part of a small hamlet of homes.
“The property originally had two reception rooms a kitchen and a bathroom on the ground floor, on the first floor there are four bedrooms. This accommodation could be altered and extended subject to potential planning restrictions.
“Viewing of the property is highly recommended as it is very unique.”
Surrey House is being marketed by Aitchisons Property Services, which has offices in Wooler and Berwick.
Offers in the region of £125,000 are wanted.
