More than 300 residents have signed a petition calling for the route taken by the Berwick hoppa bus to be extended to include Dock Road.
Residents in that part of Tweedmouth are not currently served by any bus operator and are hoping the hoppa hail and ride service will fill the void.
Coun Gregah Roughead, who represents St Boisil’s Ward on Berwick Town Council, said: “I’ve had quite a lot of disappointed residents getting in touch with me because they had hoped the hoppa would go along Dock Road.
“As a result of that I decided to start up a petition and have already gathered more than 300 signatures in just a few weeks which shows the strength of feeling.
“The nearest bus stop for people living in the Dock Road area is at Main Street in Tweedmouth next to Asda. The slope from there down to Dock Road can get quite slippy and icy in the winter and there is quite a high proportion of elderly residents in that area who are quite worried about that.
“If the hoppa bus route could be extended to include Dock Road that would solve the problem.”
The hoppa bus service is funded by Berwick Town Council, helped by a £10,000 grant from the Community Transport Get Going Fund, and operated by Adapt North East.
It started at the end of May and is being run on a trial basis on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays over the summer to see if there is demand. Early indications have shown that it is being well used. The cost of each trip is £1.10, but is free to concession card holders.
The blue 16-seater currently travels on a loop including Berwick railway station, Berwick Holiday Centre, Castlegate, Marygate, Hide Hill, Bridge Street and across the bridge to Tweedmouth, from where it returns back across to Golden Square and on to the station.
Petitioners say the route could be changed after the Old Bridge where the bus currently enters West End.
The town council has previously pledged to keep the route under review. It has also had requests to extend it into the Palace Green area. However, it is also being careful not to impact on Perryman’s, the commercial bus operator.
The hoppa timetable is available at Berwick TIC and online at www.berwicktc.gov.uk.
