One of the world’s most successful pre-school music and education programmes is about to be launched in Berwick.
Jacquline Budge has recently qualified to teach the Kindermusik programme.
Kindermusik is a music and movement programme for babies, toddlers and young children, enjoyed by over 1.5 million families in 70 countries.
Whilst visiting her grandchildren in Reading, Jacqueline, who took early retirement from a career in social work, noticed how popular pre-school music programmes were in the South of England and with her interest in child development and love of music, felt she could combine the two for young families in Berwick.
Jacqueline explained: “Music helps to develop skills in all areas; literacy, numeracy, social, emotional and physical. Each class has elements of learning which promote listening skills, through awareness, discrimination and sequencing. Vocal play, strengthens and develops vocal muscles using a variety of timbres, chants and metres.
“Playing specially developed instruments encourages fine motor skills and ensemble activities. Most of all though, the classes are fun and the children love them.”
Kindermusik has proved extremely popular with families in the south of England, but Jacqueline is the only qualified teacher of the system in Northumberland, the next nearest being in Edinburgh.
“It can be great for parents to bond with their children like this,” said Jacqueline. “And it’s not just mothers, we have dads coming along too.”
Jacqueline’s new role combines the passions in her life. “I’m just a big kid at heart myself,” she said. “And I’ve previously worked as a Community School Social worker in Eyemouth.”
She also has a musical past of a very different kind. As part of the Salvation Army Songsters, she has sung on stage in the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.
Jacqueline has applied to the Arts Council for funding to help with the classes, which she is preparing with a prospective start date in November, and is looking into hiring a venue in Berwick.
