IT was a sad day in Belford last Saturday when after 35 years Marjorie Macdonald closed the “Hobby Horse”.

The shop or “ Marjories” as it is universally known in the village was a cornucopia of delights selling everything you could possibly need from wools, needles, torches, pans, toys, cards, gifts, umbrellas and clothes to gardening and pet gifts.

Declining sales in the age of the internet have made the 76-year-old realise that the time is right to wind down.

“I have had a wonderful time,” said Marjorie “From organising coffee mornings in the shop and seeing all the generations come through the door. It’s been a privilege to serve this wonderful village.”

Over the years she has been a cornerstone of the local community, representing Belford as a councillor on Berwick Borough Council for seven years and playing key roles in the village show, carnival, floral art society and amateur dramatics group.
