Fountain stonework mystery

A Wooler man has dismissed hopes that the original stonework could be used in the fountain restoration project.

Albert Matthewson was involved in the demolition of the old fountain in the market square back in 1970.

Now 74, he believes it is an ‘impossible task’ to track down the stones.

He said: “We took the stones down to George Baillie Co down near Farm to Freeze but they were moved from there in the mid-1970s and could be anywhere now.”

The first meeting of the fountain project will take place at 7pm on February 23 at The Angel Inn, Wooler.
