Demolition of a Berwick pub to make way for 16 new homes designed specifically for older people in the community starts today (Thursday).
The Elizabethan, on North Road, has been vacant for three years.
Four Housing, the parent company of Berwick Borough Housing, will provide two-bedroom apartments designed with the needs of older people in mind, incorporating a flexible layout and technology for the provision of telecare.
The homes will be spacious, benefiting from plenty of natural light. Each will have a private balcony and will be accessible by a lift.
The apartments will also be energy efficient in order to keep energy bills to a minimum and so the properties remain warm during the winter months.
Dawn Keightley, group director of operations at Four Housing, said: “This is a positive investment in the area, providing affordable homes that will enable older people to live full and independent lives.
“At Four Housing we’re committed to improving the lives of our customers, by building homes that are right for them at different points in their lives. This includes considering the needs of older community members.”
The work will be carried out by Gentoo Construction. The demolition work will take around seven weeks with an estimated completion date of the project of early 2015.
