The Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev Martin Wharton, has suggested that no more wind farms should be authorised in Northumberland.
Writing in ‘Link’, the Diocese of Newcastle newspaper, he comments on the number of wind farms now to be seen across Northumberland, and on the divided opinions they provoke.
He said: “Whilst we all recognise the need for a greater reliance on sources of renewable energy, there are critical questions to be asked not only about the efficiency of wind turbines in general but also about the massive environmental impact that the significant growth and cumulative effect that wind farms are having in Northumberland.”
While acknowledging the need for sustainable energy he says he has seen no evidence that wind farms will ever provide reliable energy.
He said: “Is now not the time to say “enough” to any further blots on our landscape?”
