Police are continuing to remind businesses in Northumberland to be on their guard against conmen.
The reminder follows a number of cases of the “ringing the changes” con in recent months. The scam involves a customer asking to change money and then confusing a member of staff so that they end up with more cash than they started with.
Chief Inspector Peter Reeve of Northumberland Area Command, said: “All staff need to be aware that there are criminals who travel around the area looking to confuse staff members by asking to change large amounts of money. When they do this they try and distract the member of staff by changing the type of notes, asking for it back and generally causing confusion - all while trying to make off with cash.
“I’d ask all local business to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or incidents to police. Enquiries into these incidents are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191.”
