Berwick Bandits speedway rider Ricky Ashworth is in a serious but stable condition in hospital care following a high-speed crash at Scunthorpe last night.

Ashworth, who has only recently returned to action after almost three months out with bad concussion, took a heavy fall when he was racing for the Bandits in heat 11.

He was trying to pass Scorpions reserve Ryan Douglas when he over-cooked it and came to grief.

Medical staff immediately rushed to his aid and he was taken by ambulance, with a blue light, to hospital in Hull.

Early this morning, Ashworth’s sister, Jade, issued a statement on his Twitter account in which she said he was in intensive care and that medical staff were “still trying to wake him.”

The meeting was abandoned following the crash with the score standing at 34-31.

Team manager Ian Rae said: “All our thoughts are with Ricky and we wish him well in his recovery.”

Berwick Bandits said in a statement: “Ricky has been moved to a specialist neurological ward in Hull, but as yet has still to regain consciousness and remains in a stabilised condition. He is in intensive care where doctors will monitor his recovery.”
