An appeal has been lodged by Sukie and Richard Ranken over Northumberland County Council’s refusal of their plans to create an ‘earth shelter’ home in a former air raid shelter in Beadnell.

The plan was turned down by the council’s north area planning committee last summer.

It followed objections from 75 residents, the parish council, the National Trust and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership.

The site on Harbour Road had been owned by Mrs Ranken’s family since before the war, with it initially belonging to her grandparents. The shelter was partially dismantled after the war and the site became overgrown.
